路透社报道，消息人士话透露，新浪正计划在下半年推出英文版本的新浪微博，以挑战Twitter。新浪发言人Liu Qi 称，英文版本不是提供给特定市场，而是满足中国以外用户的需要。10%以上的新浪微博用户生活在海外。英文版本也将遵守中国法律。新浪微博于2009年上线，它声称其用户超过1.4亿。
